"Etherealizations"

This talk focuses on the tensions between 21st century cybernetic/posthuman tropes and 19th century ether theories. It explores the re-actualisation of archetypical “ethers” (the myth of Aether, chemical ether, and luminiferous aether) in cultural and technological contemporary sites. In particular, the talk revisits the prosthetic experience of the virtual from an anaesthetic perspective while interrogating the question of affect and addiction.
